Well-known music writer Chet Flippo dies

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 – Chet Flippo, a longtime music writer at CMT and Billboard, has passed away.

Flippo was born in Fort Worth, Texas and was in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Flippo worked as Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone and later became Rolling Stone's New York Bureau Chief in 1974.

While covering the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and The Who, he also started the magazine's coverage of country music.

He left the magazine in 1980 to write "Your Cheatin' Heart: A Biography of Hank Williams." He subsequently wrote books on Paul McCartney, Graceland, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie.

Flippo later worked for Billboard as its Nashville bureau chief from 1995-2000. He received the Country Music Association's 1998 CMA Media Achievement Award. He also worked for SonicNet.com and was Editorial Director of CMT and CMT.com.
