Understanding or trying to understand the Grammys

Country Standard Time Editorial, March 2001

Who can figure out the Grammys? They go from the very mainstream in handing out three to Faith Hill, who has less and less to do with country and more and more to do with pop to Johnny Cash winning best male country performer for "Solitary Man."

And then there was the best new artist award. In a field including country singer Brad Paisley and several rock acts, who wins, but veteran Shelby Lynne? As the singer, who has had phase of country, torch and jazz, told the crowd, "6 albums and 13 years." No arguing Lynne's talents, but "new?" She obviously didn't quite agree with that either. Not considering the amount of sweat and turmoil she has endured over the years.

Bottom line is that this all goes to demonstrate the awards shows are not to be taken overly seriously.

Oh yes, the Academy of Country Music is next up in May.
