Singing From the Heart (Rounder, 2009)
Dailey & Vincent
Reviewed by John Walker
The idea originated from wanting to support the Church of Christ's practice of singing without any instrumentation. The project is also benefiting Tennessee Bible College, a Church of Christ institution. You can hear Malcolm L. Hill, the president of the college, reciting a spiritual message in the great inspirational tune The Old Rugged Cross.
Completing the remarkable full quartet sound on the record are some of the best vocalists in the business. Tenor Andy Ball, bass Glenn Dustin, baritone Tony King, tenor Shawn Lane, bass Jeff Pearles, tenor Anthony Facello and tenor Molly Skaggs, the daughter of Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White. Former band mate Doyle Lawson also contributes on baritone vocals and writing with Dailey on 'Til I See You Face To Face.
The 12 songs are mostly traditional gospel favorites, including the aforementioned Old Rugged Cross, Near The Cross, Farther Along andAmazing Grace. This compilation was done on purpose in hopes the listener could sing along and enjoy.
As the title mentions, these are spiritual songs strictly from the heart of the singers. This unique arrangement allows the emotions of Dailey and Vincent, along with their guests, to display their amazing vocal rhythms throughout very well.
