Tell Someone (Rebel, 2007)

Kenny and Amanda Smith

Reviewed by Kevin Oliver

In bluegrass music, gospel songs are such an ingrained part of the repertoire that it shouldn't come as much of a surprise any more when a successful band like the Kenny & Amanda Smith Band releases an all-gospel bluegrass album.

Like many bluegrass musicians, the Smiths were brought up listening to and playing in church, so this is more of a coming home party than it is a detour from their previous work. In fact, except for the lyrical content there isn't much difference musically from their secular selections.

The songs are a nice mixture of standards, classics and new compositions, kicking off in high gear with a spirited rendition of the southern gospel classic, "Shoutin' Time." Amanda Smith continues to prove herself as one of the genre's best vocalists on "Mary Had a Little Boy" and "Stepping On The Clouds," and fans of the group's crisp musicianship will enjoy the many uptempo tunes like "I've Got More To Go To Heaven For."
