Tales oF Rat Fink (Yep Roc, 2006)

The Sadies

Reviewed by Andy Turner

Following on the heels of the live two-CD "In Concert, Vol. 1.," the soundtrack to "Tales of Rat Fink" is the Sadies' second release this year. And a fun, wild one it is. Featuring 26 twangy instrumental songs at just over 31 minutes, this is music of surfing, hot rods, westerns, garages, juvenile delinquency and romance, distilled with equal parts proficiency and zeal.

The film is Ron Mann's documentary detailing the wigged out life of custom car designer Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. The soundtrack features 26 of 48 pieces of music used in the film to complement the action, with many songs lasting less than a minute. As such, a straight listen may not be your best approach here. Import it and shuffle it on your iPod, put its songs on mixes, use it as your own personal theme music when you walk in places. Whatever you do, you're guaranteed to have a swell time courtesy of The Sadies.
