The Final Recordings (Varese Sarabande, 1996)

Lefty Frizzell

Reviewed by Joel Bernstein

Lefty Frizzell suffered a fatal stroke before he had a chance to build on his momentum he gained from his 1973 album, "That's the Way Love Goes," which featured "I Never Go Around Mirrors." The Varese collection gathers all 16 of his ABC recordings.

Frizzell was not the unique singer he once had been (as the remake of his first hit "I Love You A Thousand Ways" proves), but he was still as good as his best imitators. Varese's package, while not absolutely essential, is a lot better than you'd probably expect.
