Two Old Friends (Relentless Nashville, 2001)
Merle Haggard & Albert E. Brumley Jr.
Reviewed by Larry Stephens
Merle Haggard and Albert E. Brumley, Jr. team for an album of duets here. Brumley, the son of Albert Brumley, Sr. ("I'll Fly Away"), has followed in his father's footsteps as a writer of gospel and is an excellent baritone singer, too. Hag and Brumley team up for 11 tunes, including "I'll Fly Away" and "I'll Meet You In The Morning." Haggard shows his deft touch with a pen on this album, too, with "If You See A Change In Me" and "Someday He'll Whisper My Name."
Twenty-one cuts and there's not a bad one among them. Whether you just love gospel music or you're a Haggard fan, these two CDs should be in your collection.
