Bang, Bang, Bang (DreamWorks Nashville, 1999)
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Reviewed by George Hauenstein
One of the most talented and long-running groups in music, NGBD is back with a mostly upbeat, pop-flavored country record. Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Ibbottson, Bob Carpenter and Jimmie Fadden have been at it long enough to know what their fans enjoy.
This album contains a collection of very accessible and likeable material, written by band members and some of the best songwriters Nashville has to offer, Jim Lauderdale, Gillian Welch, Dennis Linde and Matraca Berg (Hannah's wife). "Rent, Groceries and Gasoline," "It's About Time" and "Southbound Train" are the top tunes.
The NGDB has had record label trouble of late and hasn't seen the country charts in some time. This album is full of energy and sincerity. Though not anywhere near as ground breaking as the band's two 'Circle' albums, the songs here are fun and enjoyable to listen to. It's a good comeback album.
