Though I had heard of them for years, I didn't actually hear the music of the Maddox Brothers and Rose, who died on Tax Day at 72, until perhaps four years ago when I picked up two Arhoolie CD collections, which cover their 1947-51 recordings on 4 Star. I was simply curious if they were as good as I'd always heard and, if anything, they were better than I could ever have imagined! I'd never heard anything remotely like their music: the speed, the power, the humor, the giggling in the background and the sheer joy of making music that existed for no other reason than it was fun. ...
