Carrie Underwood doesn't ring true

Jeffrey Remz  |  February 21, 2012

Carrie Underwood let out a "little teaser" to her fans on Tuesday - a short YouTube video of her single Good Girl. The song will be on her upcoming disc out on Tuesday.

I certainly have nothing against Underwood. I think she's a great singer and enjoyed her last album. I will say I think she could be far more traditional in her approach, which would work just fine for her instead of the more pop edge to her sound. In concert, she rocks way way too much.

Back to the teaser. S,he wants to engage her fans and tells them near the beginning of the video, "I don't think I'm supposed to do this, but I'm so excited about the first single, Good Girl, I thought I'd give you guys a little teaser because hey what are they going to do to me?" before going into the studio so the folks at the controls can play a snippet of the new song. The vocals are strong on the fast-paced song, which rocks.

Somehow, this just doesn't seem to ring all that true, but, of course, this is probably meant as a joke. First off, Underwood looks just a tad too made up and perfect with a chunk of make-up on in what she said was her last day in the recording studio.

Do we really believe in this day and age where marketing is ultra important in the music world that Underwood wasn't doing something planned? I'd be quite surprised if Underwood did this without input from her management team and label. The approach is just too cute.

I have no problem with giving sneak peaks and getting the fans excited - many artists do that in various genres - but be straight with them at least. Or maybe this could have been funnier although I know humor is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. To each his or own taste. To me, this didn't reach my funny bone.

Of course, when all is said and done, the most important thing will be the quality of the music of the new CD. As usual, I look forward to hearing where Underwood is at musically. Hopefully, that will ring true.
