Keep the country coming

The Northeaster used to be the backwoods when it came to getting country music acts to come. I can't tell you how many times artist x would utter the same tired refrain of something to the effect that "Who knew there were country music fans in New England?"

With that said, it's refreshing to see several outlets in the past few years open up for country music. WKLB, the Boston radio station for country, has brought newer acts to the Hard Rock Café (mainly) for a few years. Last week, WKLB even hosted a brought Dierks Bentley to town for an easily sold-out gig prior to the release of his new CD "Home."

The Band Perry and Billy Currington are among many acts who have made it to Boston through WKLB. The concerts are on the shorter side, about 45 minutes to an hour with an opening act usually performing. So, while not the regular set length, at least it's a chance to see the singers.

A new arrival is Toby Keith's club in Foxboro, Mass., literally next to the home of the New England Patriots. Ronnie Dunn officially opened the club in late November. Last night, Craig Campbell was there showing off his traditional country bona fides. Good show and a pretty good crowd in a real nice, comfortable club. Almost literally a stone's throw away, Showcase Live also has hosted country acts.

It's great to have these outlets available to country music fans. The price is right (only $10 for Bentley and CampbelL), and the clubs seem to be run right. Let's hope this continues. This is the way to help keep country vibrant.
