Springsteen announces new disc

Monday, November 25, 2013 – Bruce Springsteen will release "High Hopes" on Jan. 14.

The disc includes the members of the E Street Band as well as guitarist Tom Morello. Recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City, "High Hopes" is Springsteen's 18th studio album and includes his own liner notes that detail the album's evolution.

Morello joined Bruce and the E Street Band on tour in Australia in March 2013 (sitting in for Steve Van Zandt), and became, as Springsteen said, "my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level." Morello also duets with Springsteen on The Ghost of Tom Joad.

Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, also appear on several songs of what Springsteen calls "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade."

"I was working on a record of some of our best unreleased material from the past decade when Tom Morello (sitting in for Steve during the Australian leg of our tour) suggested we ought to add High Hopes to our live set," said Springsteen on his web site.

"I had cut High Hopes, a song by Tim Scott McConnell of the LA based Havalinas, in the 90′s. We worked it up in our Aussie rehearsals and Tom then proceeded to burn the house down with it. We re-cut it mid tour at Studios 301 in Sydney along with Just Like Fire Would, a song from one of my favorite early Australian punk bands, The Saints (check out I'm Stranded). Tom and his guitar became my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level. Thanks for the inspiration Tom."

Some of these songs, American Skin and Ghost of Tom Joad, you'll be familiar with from our live versions. I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording. The Wall is something I'd played on stage a few times and remains very close to my heart. The title and idea were Joe Grushecky's, then the song appeared after Patti and I made a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It was inspired by my memories of Walter Cichon. Walter was one of the great early Jersey Shore rockers, who along with his brother Ray (one of my early guitar mentors) led the "Motifs."

The Motifs were a local rock band who were always a head above everybody else. Raw, sexy and rebellious, they were the heroes you aspired to be. But these were heroes you could touch, speak to, and go to with your musical inquiries. Cool, but always accessible, they were an inspiration to me, and many young working musicians in 1960′s central New Jersey. Though my character in The Wall is a Marine, Walter was actually in the Army, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry. He was the first person I ever stood in the presence of who was filled with the mystique of the true rock star. Walter went missing in action in Vietnam in March 1968. He still performs somewhat regularly in my mind, the way he stood, dressed, held the tambourine, the casual cool, the freeness. The man who by his attitude, his walk said "you can defy all this, all of what's here, all of what you've been taught, taught to fear, to love and you'll still be alright." His was a terrible loss to us, his loved ones and the local music scene. I still miss him.

This is music I always felt needed to be released. From the gangsters of Harry's Place, the ill-prepared roomies on Frankie Fell In Love (shades of Steve and I bumming together in our Asbury Park apartment) the travelers in the wasteland of Hunter Of Invisible Game, to the soldier and his visiting friend in The Wall, I felt they all deserved a home and a hearing."

Songs are:
1. High Hopes (Tim Scott McConnell) featuring Tom Morello
2. Harry's Place * featuring Tom Morello
3. American Skin (41 Shots) featuring Tom Morello
4. Just Like Fire Would (Chris J. Bailey) featuring Tom Morello
5. Down In The Hole *
6. Heaven's Wall ** featuring Tom Morello
7. Frankie Fell In Love
8. This Is Your Sword
9. Hunter Of Invisible Game * featuring Tom Morello
10. The Ghost of Tom Joad duet with Tom Morello

11. The Wall 12. Dream Baby Dream (Martin Rev and Alan Vega) featuring Tom Morello

The disc was produced by Ron Aniello with Springsteen.

Beck signs with Capitol, new CD coming in '14

Monday, October 28, 2013 – Beck signed with Capitol Records, which will release his first album of all new material since 2008's "Modern Guilt" in February 2014.

The new record, "Morning Phase," has been described as a companion piece of sorts to Beck's 2002 "Sea Change." The disc features many of the same musicians who played on that record (who are also currently accompanying him live) - Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner.

In December 2012, Beck released an illustrated song reader featuring sheet music for 20 new original songs. The project quickly took on a life of its own, with musicians from across the globe recording their own interpretations, as well as Beck's own shows featuring eclectic lists of co-conspirators putting their own stamp on the compositions.

Beck then re-imagined David Bowie's "Sound + Vision" with a hand-selected 160-piece orchestra leading to an interactive 360-degree filming of a live performance of the track. This summer brought three singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl (Defriended, I Won't Be Long and Gimme) and September saw Beck custom-creating two performance pieces for Doug Aitken's Station to Station series of transient happenings, all interspersed with his current run of live shows.

Luscious Jackson is back

Thursday, September 12, 2013 – Luscious Jackson is back. Jill Cunniff, Gabrielle Glaser and Kate Schellenbach, will return on Nov. 5 with "Magic Hour," its first disc in 14 years

Produced by Cunniff and Glaser with an assist from old friend Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz on the track So Rock On) and released on the band's own City Song imprint, Magic Hour is Luscious Jackson's fourth album and first full-length offering of new material since 1999's "Electric Honey."

"When we were making the new album," Cunniff said, "we felt like we did when we were making our first demos. We were just smiling and laughing all the time because we rediscovered a musical connection we all really loved and missed."

Reports of Luscious Jackson's reunion and the forthcoming album were confirmed when the band decided to gauge public demand for a new record by partnering with PledgeMusic.com. The band offered fans the opportunity to fund the sessions via pledges ranging from a basic $10 album download to a $10,000 house concert. Response was fast and furious, with pledges surpassing 100 percent of the band's goal within 48 hours. Pledges are still being accepted for remaining packages.

The band posted its new song, Show Us What You Got on YouTube.

Luscious Jackson's debut album, "Natural Ingredients," was released on Grand Royal/Capitol in 1994, as the band embarked on that year's Lollapalooza tour as well as an arena tour with R.E.M. Produced by Daniel Lanois, Luscious Jackson's sophomore album "Fever In Fever Out" dropped in 1996. Featuring the hit Naked Eye, the disc went Gold. Keyboardist Vivian Trimble left the band following the conclusion of a world tour supporting "Fever..." making album number three, 1999's "Electric Honey," the band's first as a trio and last before they called it a day in 2000. The hiatus was first broken in 2006, but it wasn't until early 2012 that the group went the crowd sourcing route.

Sting announces new CD

Wednesday, June 5, 2013 – Sting will release "The Last Ship" on Cherrytree/Interscope/A&M Records on Sept. 24, an album inspired by the singer's forthcoming play of the same name.

The play explores the central themes of homecoming and self-discovery, drawing upon his memories of growing up in the shadow of the Swan Hunters Shipyard in Wallsend, England.

The play, in which Sting has been creatively immersed for nearly 3 years, debuts on Broadway in 2014 and is a collaboration with Tony Award winners Joe Mantello (director; Wicked, Other Desert Cities), John Logan (writer; Red, Skyfall)) and Brian Yorkey (writer; Next to Normal). "The Last Ship" tells the story of the demise of the shipbuilding industry in 1980s Newcastle which had, for so long, shaped and overshadowed the city, its development, and its community.

The disc was produced by Rob Mathes (Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Lou Reed, Carly Simon) and engineered and mixed by Donal Hodgson.

"The Last Ship" will be available as both a digital and physical release in 2 configurations - a 12-song version and a 2-disc deluxe version featuring 5 additional tracks. (The 12-song version will also be available on vinyl.) A super deluxe edition, containing 2-discs comprised of 20 tracks within special packaging, will also be sold as a physical product exclusively at Amazon.com. AmazonMP3 will be the exclusive retailer for the 20-track, super deluxe digital edition.

The Smashin Pumpkins release new version of "The Aeroplane Flies High"

Wednesday, June 5, 2013 – The Smashing Pumpkins will release four separate versions, all fully remastered, of their platinum-selling 1996 box set "The Aeroplane Flies High."

The release will come in 6-CD +1 DVD; 5-LPs and Deluxe Digital and Standard Digital editions on July 23.

The original CD was a five-disc box set that featured expanded versions of singles from its1995 double album "Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness," including Bullet With Butterfly Wings, 1979, Zero, Tonight and Thirty-Three. The CD achieved Diamond certification by the RIAA for sales of 10 million discs and digital equivalent per disc (5 million copies of the double album).

These new limited edition box sets feature the original 33 track version remastered by Bob Ludwig and expanded to 104 tracks (90 audio and 14 audio-visual) encompassing unreleased demos, alternative versions and live recordings. In addition to expanded versions of Aeroplane's original 5 discs, a sixth disc contains live recordings from the 1996 Mellon Collie tour, while the DVD content is taken from a July, 4 1997, performance in Belfort, France. Included is a 46-page book with liner notes written by David Wild, plus extensive track-by-track notes by The Smashing Pumpkins founder-singer-songwriter-guitarist Billy Corgan for the original release's 33 tracks.

Wild wrote, "'The Aeroplane Flies High' is a trip, and perhaps fittingly for Billy Corgan, it was exciting, exhausting and scary one that reveals a lot about the Smashing Pumpkins at this point in their musical journey."

The Smashing Pumpkins will soon start recording the follow-up to 2012's "Oceania." The band launched its 2013 world tour in Mexico this past March and is heading to Europe and Japan for summer dates through Aug. 11.

Sharon Jones battles cancer, cancels tour

Monday, June 3, 2013 – Soul singer Sharon Jones has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer and has postponed a tour and the release of her next album, she announced on her band's Web site today.

Jones said she has stage 1 bile duct cancer. She is expected to have surgery immediately to remove the tumor. The cancer has not spread.

"It is expected that the immediate proposed surgical solution will lead to a full recovery, but because of its invasive and complex nature, will necessitate a rather lengthy convalescence," said the announcement.

The group has canceled all summer dates and pushed back indefinitely the release of its sixth album, "Give the People What They Want," which was to have come out on Aug. 6 on the Dap-Tone label.

"Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on," Jones, 57, said. "Luckily we caught it really early and fast, and the doctors say it's operable and curable."

Jones is best known for the song I Learned The Hard Way.

NIN readies new CD, signs label deal

Monday, May 27, 2013 – Columbia Records signed Nine Inch Nails, the label announced Tuesday. NIN will release a new studio album later this year.

"I've been less than honest about what I've really been up to lately," said Trent Reznor. "For the last year I've been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great. This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again. My forays into film, HTDA and other projects really stimulated me creatively, and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go."

"We are thrilled at Columbia to work with a true renaissance artist like Trent Reznor on the return of Nine Inch Nails and an exciting new chapter of innovative music from them," commented Rob Stringer, Chairman of Columbia Records.

The band is performing at festivals this summer, including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Leeds, Reading, Made In America and the Voodoo Festival. The new Nine Inch Nails lineup - Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Robin Finck, Trent Reznor and Ilan Rubin - will debut on July 26 at the Fuji Rock Festival in Naeba, Japan. The show will mark Nine Inch Nails' first live performance in nearly four years.

Richie Havens dies of heart attack at 72

Monday, April 22, 2013 – Folk singer Richie Havens died this morning in his home from a sudden heart attack. He was 72.

Havens first became part of musical history during his impromptu opening performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Best known for his distinctive intense, rhythmic guitar style and soulful covers of pop and folk songs, Havens toured and recorded music for more than 40 years before retiring from the road 3 years ago.

Born in Brooklyn, Havens was the eldest of nine children. He later moved to Greenwich Village at 20. "I saw the Village as a place to escape to, in order to express yourself," he said. "I had first gone there during the Beatnik days of the 1950s to perform poetry, then I drew portraits for 2 years and stayed up all night listening to folk music in the clubs. It took a while before I thought of picking up a guitar."

After two records for Douglas Records, Havens signed with Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman, and landed a record deal with Verve Forecast. Verve released "Mixed Bag" in 1967. By 1969, he had released five more albums. "Something Else Again" (1968) became Havens' first album to hit the Billboard chart and also pulled "Mixed Bag" back onto the charts.

His Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career. As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours (in part because he was told to perform a lengthy set because many artists were delayed in reaching the festival location), and was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual Motherless Child that became Freedom. The subsequent Woodstock movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience. He also appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival in late August 1969.

Following the success of his Woodstock performance, Havens started his own record label, Stormy Forest, and put out "Stonehenge" in 1970. Later that year came "Alarm Clock," which yielded the George Harrison penned hit single Here Comes the Sun. The album was Haven's first to reach Billboard’s Top 30 Chart. Stormy Forest released four more of his own albums: "The Great Blind Degree" (1971), "Live On Stage" (1972), "Portfolio" (1973) and "Mixed Bag II" (1974).

During the 1970's, Havens also became involved in environmental issues.

Havens released 5 albums since 1980. His final disc was "Nobody Left to Crown" in 2008. On March 20, 2012, Havens announced on his Facebook page that he would stop touring after 45 years, due to health concerns.

BIffy Clyro cancels tour due to illness

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 – Biffy Clyro today were forced to cut short their North American tour and return to Great Britain immediately.

Vocalist Simon Neil "has been struggling with a serious respiratory problem on the shows, including two nights supporting Muse at Madison Square Garden on Monday and Tuesday of this week, and was advised by doctors that he was endangering his long term health if he chose to continue performing on this run," a statement said.

Further dates with Muse across the U.S. and Canada, plus a second weekend performance at the Coachella Festival this coming Saturday, were cancelled.

"The band wish to express how sorry they are that they aren't able to carry out the full run of shows, and hope to confirm a new run of North American shows shortly," the press release said. "All UK and European dates this summer should, however, remain unaffected."

Kid Rock goes el cheapo on tour, and that's great for fans

Monday, April 8, 2013 – Kid Rock is launching a summer tour by offering tickets in all sections at $20 price point, using paperless tickets where possible, and lowering prices on everything from parking to beer to merchandise for every show in every city.

Kid Rock and his Twisted Brown Trucker Band will perform under the stars in amphitheaters this summer, beginning June 28 at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va. through Sept. 15 at the Live Nation Amphitheatre in Tampa.

The tour includes three special shows at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Kid Rock's hometown of Detroit. Kool & The Gang, ZZ Top, and Uncle Kracker are confirmed as support on select dates.

Participating Walmart locations will offer all-in $20 tickets -- no fees, no parking charges. Kid Rock is reserving the first two rows for every show as free upgrades for lucky fans who will be selected at random. Special $4 draught beers, value food packages, cheaper parking (where possible), free samples of Jimmy John's sandwiches at select venues, free coffee at the end of the show and $20 tour t shirts will be available as well. As an additional method to combat scalping, Kid Rock will be releasing 1,000 tickets from each show directly as Platinum Tickets via LiveNation.com. As some of the best seats in the house, Platinum Tickets are market priced tickets. This removes the money making opportunity from scalpers by pricing these select seats at market value. Tickets will be sold directly to fans so not to run the risk of having to purchase from unauthorized third parties

"Everyone knows the economy is still hurting people across the country, but I didn't want that to be a reason why everyone couldn't get out and enjoy themselves on a summer night," Kid Rock said. "So, we're going to throw the biggest and best party ever, with prices across the board that are reasonable and transparent. No hidden fees, no gimmicks. We're not sparing any expense on this tour, we're going over the top as always, but that doesn't mean we're going to ask the fans to pay more. If this works we're going to play to packed houses of fans who appreciate what we're doing. If it doesn't, might be a long summer. But someone has to go out there and fight these high prices and change things up, and I'm lucky enough that I can afford to take a pay cut. $20. Best night ever."

Kid Rock is touring in support of his 10th album, "Rebel Soul," and will perform a special set on the outdoor stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight on ABC. He will also make a special appearance on Chelsea Lately on E!, Tuesday, April 9 and will be returning to Piers Morgan Live, along with Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino, to discuss this groundbreaking tour this Friday, April 12.

Grohl confirms Sundance gig

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 – Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and Park City Live today confirmed the live debut of Grohl's Sound City Players on Jan. 18 during Sundance.

The concert will feature core musicians and special guests from Grohl's Sundance Film Festival selected film "Sound City."

The film was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns M' Roses, Fear, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica.

The film's soundtrack, "Sound City Reel to Reel," is a collection of original music created specifically for the film and this companion record. Preceded by currently available first single Cut Me Some Slack, by Grohl, Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, the film and album also features contributions Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Rick Springfield, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, Robert Levon Been and Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Grohl's band mates from both Foo Fighters (Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel) and Nirvana (Novoselic), Jim Keltner, Rami Jaffee, Alain Johannes, Chris Goss and Jessy Greene.
