The Beach Boys reunite for new album, tour

Saturday, December 17, 2011 – The founding members of The Beach Boys will reunite for a global 50th Anniversary celebration in 2012 with a new album and tour.

Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks will come together for a new studio album and commemorative catalog releases with Capitol/EMI and a 50-date international tour to begin in April with a headlining performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as well as other exciting events to be announced.

Brian Wilson said, "This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys, and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again."

Mike Love said, "We got together at Capitol Records and re-recorded Do It Again. Brian and I wrote that song which went to number 1 in Great Britain, Australia and elsewhere some 44 years ago. Brian paid me a compliment saying, 'How can a guy sound that great so many years later?' Later on, while working out some harmonies on a new song Brian had written, I got a chance to return the compliment. It was a thrill to be around a piano again with Brian, Alan and Bruce and experience firsthand the brilliance of Cousin Brian's gift for vocal arrangements. I am very much looking forward to David Marks joining us and thrilling with his surf guitar licks. Music has been the unifying and harmonizing fact of life in our family since childhood. It has been a huge blessing that we have been able to share with the world. Wouldn't It Be Nice to Do It Again? Absolutely."

Al Jardine said, "The Beach Boys were recently inducted into the California Hall of Fame. From our humble beginnings as brothers, cousins and friends, we have been honored to sing the praises of California, and I'm really excited for our fans to be able to see us again in concert on the world stage, and to celebrate our 50th anniversary together with a new studio album."

"I will be looking forward to singing Brian Wilson's melodies and Mike Love's lyrics once again in concert with many of the original band members, but imagine what we all could come up with vocally in a recording studio atmosphere under Brian's musical direction," Johnston said.

David Marks said, "I'm really looking forward to celebrating this important milestone in The Beach Boys' history with the other guys, and with Capitol Records - where it all began 50 years ago. It means a lot to me that we can all reunite and pay tribute to the fans who have kept the music alive."

The Beach Boys have already recorded several songs for their new album. The as-yet-untitled album, the first to feature all of the band's surviving original members in decades, is being produced by Brian Wilson and executive produced by Mike Love.

The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI have also teamed up for a 50th Anniversary campaign spotlighting the band's entire catalog, with several new commemorative releases planned for 2012, including a new hits collection and a career-spanning box set.

Founded in Hawthorne, Cal. in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, Marks, a neighbor, joined the group for their first wave of hits on Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing records for the group.

The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, "Surfin' Safari," that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style.

In 1966, The Beach Boys were one of the first bands to found its own record label with the launch of Brother Records, Inc. (BRI), with the band's members as its shareholders and Capitol Records as its distribution partner. The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan's record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits (36). The group's most recent disc was "The SMiLE Sessions," released in November.

Adele performed on Saturday evening in Denver (Ogden Theater) which "proved too early a return to the stage," her web site said.

Die Krupps forced to shelve US tour

Tuesday, May 17, 2011 – Die Krupps pulled out of their upcoming tour with Front Line Assembly due to complications with the band's U.S. work permits.

"I am very upset about it," said front man Jurgen Engler. "We were really looking forward to finally playing for our U.S. fans again after a long time, before the new studio album comes out. Our Canadian fans can see us this week at the Kinetik festival in Montreal, where we will be co-headlining the first night. Hope to see you all there."

In January, the band released "Als Wären Wir Für Immer" is a 2011 mini-album from the German industrial outfit, their first release with exclusively new material since 1997.

The Decemberists Jenny Conlee battles breast cancer

Tuesday, May 3, 2011 – The Decemberists are going ahead with their spring and summer tour, although band member Jenny Conlee is being treated for breast cancer. Conlee is likely to miss shows this month and in June.

The band has been touring behind "The King Is Dead" Cd, which came out in January.

In an email, lead singer, Colin Meloy wrote, "About a month ago, we all at Decemberists HQ got hit with some pretty hard news. Jenny Conlee, our since-the-very-beginning accordion and keyboard player and all-around rad person was diagnosed with breast cancer. If you or anyone in your world has been handed a similar diagnosis, you know what a bolt-out-of-the-blue this news can be."

"The good news is that Jenny caught it early. And while the prognosis is very, very good for a full recovery, tackling the disease will mean some intensive treatment for our Jenny as well as a lot of important recovery time."

"So I'm writing this to say that, weighing our options, and with Jenny's fervent blessings, we've decided to go forward with our scheduled tour dates this spring and summer."

"What we know now: Jenny will very likely miss all nine of our concerts in May and June. We're all hoping that her recovery will be such that she'll be able to get back on board as soon as possible."

In a separate statement, Conlee said, "I am very sorry to say that I will be missing a few shows coming up as I go through treatment for breast cancer. It has been great to be on tour these past few weeks. The band and crew are like family to me and have been incredibly supportive and understanding. To be making music with everyone and seeing the fans has helped me to feel more positive and keep my mind off of my diagnosis. But, alas, as the tour winds down, it is time for me to get back to reality. I will try to get into surgery as soon as I can after we return from this leg of the tour so I can begin my recovery. There are still a few unknowns out there concerning my cancer, but I am thinking positive and hope to be back on the road soon. Thanks for all of your support! See you soon!"

Kate Bush releases new music, sort of

Tuesday, April 12, 2011 – Kate Bush releases a new album "Director's Cut" on May 17 on her own label Fish People, in conjunction with EMI. Bush revisits a selection of tracks from her albums "The Sensual World" and "The Red Shoes"

She re-recorded some elements whilst keeping the best musical performances of each song – making it something of a director's cut but in sound, not vision.

Bush said, "Originally when I wrote the song The Sensual Worl, I had used text from the end of ‘Ulysses' by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing. I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting. Well, I'm not James Joyce am I? When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes. It is now re-titled Flower Of the Mountain, and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept."

All the lead vocals and drums on "Director's Cut" are new performances, some of the tracks featuring guests including Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and, on backing vocals, Mica Paris. Three songs have been completely re-recorded, including This Woman's Work.

"For some time I have felt that I wanted to revisit tracks from these two albums and that they could benefit from having new life breathed into them. Lots of work had gone into the two original albums and now these songs have another layer of work woven into their fabric. I think of this as a new album."

"Director's Cut" will be released under the following formats: digital album, standard CD in a case-bound book, deluxe CD (three disc package, including "Director's Cut," "The Sensual Word" and re-mastered "The Red Shoes") in a case-bound book and two-disc vinyl. Other digital and vinyl formats will be made available on katebush.com. Details will be published shortly.

Bush's new single, a brand new version of Deeper Understanding, was just sent to radio. A new short film to accompany the track will be premiered in a few weeks. It's directed by Bush and stars Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber and Noel Fielding - and Kate's son Albert. He is also featured in the song. Bush is currently working on new material although no release date has been set for this.

Chicago bluesman Lacy Gibson dies

Tuesday, April 12, 2011 – Chicago bluesman Lacy Gibson died on April 11 from a heart attack. His rich, flashy guitar style was featured in dozens of bands, including those of Son Seals, Otis Rush, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Billy "The Kid" Emerson, Billy Boy Arnold and Sun Ra.

Born on May 1, 1936 in Salisbury, N.C., Gibson headed to Chicago with his family in 1949. He gravitated to the city's blues scene, where he met Willie Dixon, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Sunnyland Slim and Muddy Waters, learning directly from the masters. By the mid-1960s, Gibson was an in-demand session player for local labels, including Chess, where he worked with Buddy Guy and sang My Love Is Real with Guy on guitar. He cut two 45s for the tiny Repetto label in 1968, one of which also features Guy on guitar. His first LP, "Wishing Ring," was released on his brother-in-law Sun Ra's El Saturn label in 1971.

Gibson played in Son Seals' band for two years, and appears on Seals' "Live And Burning"album on Alligator. Gibson to cut four tracks for the label's Grammy Award-nominated " Living Chicago Blues< /em>" series, released in 1980. In 1983, Gibson released "Switchy Titchy" on the Black Magic label. During the 1980s and throughout the 1990s, he continued to perform locally around Chicago, sometimes with his own band and other times backing Billy Boy Arnold and Big Time Sarah.

His most recent release was 1996's "Crying For My Bab"y (Delmark), a first-issue of sessions originally recorded during the 1970s.

Manzarek, Roy Rogers team up on new CD

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 – Ray Manzarek, co-founder and keyboardist of The Doors, and slide guitar ace Roy Rogers are putting out "Translucent Blues," on May 24. On Blind Pig.

The release is a hard driving blues/rock project with influences from blues, rock and jazz and lyrics that include tinges of poetry and literature. The CD features music and lyric collaborations from Manzarek and Rogers, and lyric contributions from Warren Zevon, Jim Carroll and poet Michael McClure.

Manzarek said of the album, "This is a head-first dive into American contemporary blues. Roy and I take the unique art form of the blues and add a 21st century twist to the genre. We are working with a group of great American poets: Michael McClure, famed beat and close friend of Jack Kerouac and Alan Ginsburg; Jim Carroll of 'The Basketball Diaries' fame; Warren Zevon - the 'Werewolf of London' himself; Michael C. Ford, noted L.A. jazz poet and good friend of Jim Morrison's; and Scott Richardson, blues rocker of Michigan's 'The Scott Richardson Case' and now a California seeker of ultimate mystical experiences. Their lyrics are superb, succinct, now, and salient. What Roy and I have weaved around their words are songs that are not standard 12 bar, but do, in fact, live and breathe in the dark, underground world... of the blues. 'Translucent Blues'"

Rogers said, "This collaboration with Ray was a joy from start to finish. We found inspiration not only from the music and lyrics, but most of all from each other - to create a great sound. To me, the blues is as complex a music as it gets - either you feel it or you don't. But when you add the spice of some of these lyrics, it definitely takes you on a different route. Take a ride with us."

Rufus Wainwright becomes father

Monday, February 21, 2011 – Rufus Wainwright became a father earlier this month when the daughter of Leonard Cohen gave birth to a girl.

Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen was born on Feb. 2, 2011 in Los Angeles, to parents Lorca Cohen, Wainwright and "Deputy Dad" Jorn Weisbrodt.," according to Wainwright's web site. "The little angel is evidently healthy, presumably happy and certainly very very beautiful."

Lorca Cohen has been described as a close friend of Wainwright and his partner. Wainwright is the son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle.

"Daddy #1 would like to offer everyone a digital cigar and welcome the little lady in with a French phrase from his favorite folk song, A La Claire Fontaine : "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai."

Wainwright clarified the parental arrangement. "In many of the articles announcing the birth of Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen, Lorca Cohen is characterized as "the surrogate." Pet Shop Boys write ballet

Wednesday, February 2, 2011 – Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe release the music for their first ever full-length ballet, "The Most Incredible Thing," on March 22 through Astralwerks Records.

The ballet is collaboration with choreographer Javier De Frutos and Britain's contemporary dance theatre, Sadler's Wells. Based on the Hans Christian Anderson story of the same title, it runs at Sadler's Wells in London from March 17-26.

Tennant and Lowe proposed Andersen's story as the basis for a new ballet to Sadler's Wells in London in 2007 after a friend, the then Royal Ballet principal, Ivan Putrov, asked Tennant if Pet Shop Boys would consider writing a piece of music for him to dance to at Sadler's Wells.

Coincidentally a couple of days later, Lowe suggested to Tennant that "The Most Incredible Thing" would make an excellent narrative for a ballet and, inspired by this synchronicity, they approached Sadler's Wells with the project. The following year De Frutos was chosen as the choreographer. The story is about a competition in a mythical kingdom where the king announces that whoever invents the most incredible thing will win the hand of the princess in marriage and half of the kingdom.

Tennant and Lowe composed most of Act One in autumn, 2008, and the rest of the score in 2010. The music is a combination of electronics and orchestra. They approached the young German musician Sven Helbig to create the orchestrations and at the end of 2010 these were recorded in Poland with the Wrocław Score Orchestra conducted by Dominic Wheeler. After the initial run of performances of "The Most Incredible Thing" in March, a return to Sadler's Wells followed by a tour is planned for 2012.

In a statement, Lowe and Tennant said, "This is a very exciting project to be part of. In the past we have written dance music so to write music for a ballet seems like a logical development. Also we have always been fascinated by giving our music a theatrical context."
