Days of Gold CD review - Days of Gold
Jake Owen aims to satisfy all comers (that is, if the current country is your thing), but the individual pieces don't quite add up. The songs may stand up on their own well enough, but when all is said and done, Owen remains an artist without much of an identity or sound. Take, for example, Beachin', one of countless country songs about the good life. Like many of his counterparts these days, there's a spoken, neo hip hop rap part to it. The song is breezy, on the catchy side, but »»»
Endless Summer EP
Jake Owen has been described by some as an artist who has evaded the prototypical country music playbook. And while that may be true, on his "Endless Summer" EP, coaxing a bit more life out of his summer tour with Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, the artist openly embraces the classic summer music formula, offering up airy, catchy jams that will remind you of cool breezes and warm waters. Owen chooses to bookend his taste of summer EP with two classic road songs, the first of which being »»»
Barefoot Blue Jean Night CD review - Barefoot Blue Jean Night
Five years ago, Jake Owen debuted on the country music charts with his twangy, yet catchy Yee Haw. Owen, who turned 30 years old on Sunday, has matured as an artist, as evidenced by the 11 songs on his third album, "Barefoot Blue Jean Saturday Night." There's plenty of versatility from southern rock to country and ballads. The title track is one of the Florida native's biggest hits. It has a perfect chorus, and it's just right for the summer time -- whether you're »»»
Editorial: Walking the talk – When names like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon and the Hag are invoked, you're talking hard core country. These are the touchstones of country , the guys who made country music what it was and still is (or maybe can be). When these folks would sing about being down-and-out and the rough-and-tumble, they knew of what they were singing about. Fast forward a few years to the country singers of today. »»»
Concert Review: Romano makes sad songs sound good – Daniel Romano perhaps couldn't help himself in commanding the stage. After all, he was only up on the small stage accompanied by his backing band, The Trilliums, consisting of a fellow acoustic guitarist and a pedal steel player. So, you knew this was not going to be an ear splitting gig unless the band was pounding it - and they did not.... »»»
Concert Review: Thorn takes crowd with him – The best of artists give it all, no matter whether they're playing for thousands or a crowd of 200. On this night, the Paul Thorn Band played their last gig of 2014 and showed what they're made of, laying it all on the line for the intimate club's audience, ending the year in fine form. The vibe was relaxed all around, with the... »»»

Fullbright writes the "Songs" John Fullbright didn' grow up around musicians or like-minded songwriters in his little hometown of Bearden, Okla. You'd never know it, though, from his raw, stark, pure and honest songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Townes Van Zandt. His debut album, "From the Ground Up," was nominated for a 2013 Grammy as the Best Americana Album, catapulting him into the company of Bonnie Raitt, Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers and The Avett Brothers.... »»»
Book dishes on guys writing the songs Jake Brown can't stop writing about music. Finally, Skaggs and White duet Perhaps there are few more beloved names in the world of country and bluegrass music than Ricky Skaggs and his wife Sharon of the country music family act The Whites. The two have been close friends since their teenage years through music, first meeting at a festival where White was performing with her father Buck White and sister Cheryl, and Skaggs was playing with Keith Whitley.... »»»
The Music Of Nashville: Original Soundtrack Season 3 Volume 1 CD review - The Music Of Nashville: Original Soundtrack Season 3 Volume 1
As the winter finale of ABC's "Nashville" draws closer, the plot lines grow thinner and this scant 10-song soundtrack follows suit. Domestic turmoil is the major theme this season as diva Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) becomes unexpectedly pregnant before the filming of a Patsy Cline biopic. Unfortunately, Panettiere's excellent rendition of "Crazy" is omitted on the album. »»»
