Strait leads all music in sales
Thursday, August 20, 2009 – George Strait enjoyed the best selling CD in the country last week with "Twang," while Taylor Swift remained first on the Billboard song chart for the week ending Aug. 29 with You Belong to Me. Striat displaced Sugarland's "Live on the Inside," which fell to fourth.
On on the song chart, Darius Rucker stayed second with Alright, while Jason Aldean was up one to third with Big Green Tractor. Rascal Flatts was fifth again with Summer Nights.
Strait's newest hit single, Living for the Night, remained seventh. Toby Keith's American Ride was up three to ninth. Keith Urban's Only You Can Love Me This Way went from 16 to 12. Zac Brown Band's Toes climbed 3 to 21. Kenny Chesney's I'm Alive with Dave Matthews was up 3 to 23. Trace Adkins moved up 4 to 26 with All I Ask For Anymore. Luke Bryan's new single I Do made a move to 27, up 4. Martina McBrtide was the big mover. Her I Just Call You Mine jumped from 35 to 29.
On the album chart, Swift was second with "Fearless." Newcomer Justin Moore debuted in third with his self-titled debut. Zac Brown Band's "The Foundation" was fifth.
On the overall top 200 chart, Swift was 9th, Moore 10th, Sugarland 11th and Zac Brown Band 13th.

Classic Christmas
George Strait, just like his last name suggests, gives it to us straight in the CD notes. "For this album, I selected Christmas songs - the ones I grew up hearing and singing - and added a little country flavor to make them sound more like me." And dang if he ain't right on the money! This is a 10-song Christmas CD - his third - with familiar songs that all sound like Strait tunes. So when he gets to track four, Jingle Bells, the music swings nicely in that winning Strait way. »»» |
Troubadour
George Strait seems to get better with age. "It Just Comes Natural" from 2006 was one of his best. The 12 songs on his 37th CD almost all turn the trick as well. Strait once again benefits from very strong material from the likes of Buddy Cannon (and Randy Hardison with the ballad "It Was Me"), Leslie Satcher (the title track and "House of Cash," a strong duet with Patty Loveless, who given a chance to shine, sounds as fine as ever in this tribute to June and Johnny »»» |

Once again, Taylor Swift has struck it rich. The teenager (can't say that for much longer) received eight Grammy nominations on Wednesday night with everything from best album to best country album. A very nice accomplishment for the country superstar with a massive teenage audience. »»»

Although he's often the accompanying yin to Gillian Welch and her Appalachian-inspired yang, Dave Rawlings has branched out with this new project and album. Although not the standard 10 or 11-song album, Rawlings nails most of these songs out of the park, especially the lovable and endearing first effort Ruby which sounds like the perfect b-side to the Stones' Angie. The song is also accented with fiddle and keys, but not at the expense of the fine melody. »»» |

Dolly Parton took her acoustic guitar, her dazzling array of stage costumes, her still-vibrant-at-60-something voice and her down-home charm to greet her fans across the pond in 2008.
