Arty Hill recording Hank tribute
Wednesday, May 20, 2009 – Cow Island Music singer Arty Hill is working on a Hank Williams tribute project. The disc, slated to come out in early fall, will contain covers and original songs about Williams.
An instrumental, Don's Bop, a tribute to the late Williams steel player Don Helms, is planned for the disc along with Church on Saturday Night, a song about the Grand Ole Opry. Hill wrote both songs.
Among the Williams songs on the disc will be I'm a Long Gone Daddy, Lovesick Blues and Pan American.
Hill is producing the disc being recorded in Baltimore. This will be Hill's third release for the Boston-based label.

Arty Hill and the Long Gone Daddys deftly demonstrate how good roots music can be when it is done simply. Aided in no small part by electric guitarist Dave Chappell and drummer Craig Stevens, Hill crafted a 12-song set of original songs - he wrote 11 of them - that express authentic country heartache and hard-drinkin' good times with modern leaning lyrics and '60s country rhythms. Even though Boston-area label Cow Island Music is still wet behind the ears, it has already put out some strong records, including this one from Arty Hill and the Long Gone Daddys. Baltimore-based Hill and company serve up meat-and-potatoes honky-tonk, and they do it with the sort of dexterity and craft that makes it seem easy. Here it is the top 30 for 2009. This isn't authoritative in case you thought otherwise. It's just one man's opinion about his favorite CDs of the year, which seemed a cut above everything else. It was incredibly hard figuring out a number one CD for the year between the Avett Brothers, Brad Paisley and George Strait. All three were great albums from different perspectives of country and roots music, and at any one time over the past few days, each was my favorite. Come back in a few days, and who knows?
