The Old 97's take a different track (Jun 1999)
Get on him or his band for sounding less country on their new album, "Fight Songs," if you want, but it will do no good, says Old 97's lead singer Rhett Miller. "Anyone who applies a set of rules to what we're doing - who's not in the band - can, basically, lump it," he explains. "Fight Songs" was recorded last October at Kingsway Studio in New Orleans with producer Andrew Williams. Thirty songs were recorded, but only 12 made it on to the album. Rhett Miller is in a good mood - with good reason. The Old 97's, the singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter's band for the past four years, have just released its third album and first for a major label. They are the critical darlings of the alt. country movement and are looking forward to a busy summer, including a string of dates on one of summer's biggest annual tours. Miller is a lot of things, though unenthusiastic is not one of them. He has been called "engimatic," but nothing could be further from the truth.... more
