Hank Jr. falls victim to foot-in-mouth disease

Jeffrey Remz  |  October 3, 2011

Hank Williams Jr. opened his big mouth and inserted his foot big time Monday during an appearance on "Fox & Friends" on the Fox Network.

Williams, who didn't appear all that excited to be on the show anyway, showed up ostensibly to be asked questions about the 2012 Republican race for President. While he eventually said he was impressed with Herman Cain, who is gaining in the polls, he made a fool out of himself earlier in the interview.

Williams pointed to the golf outing earlier this year between President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner as "one of the biggest political mistakes ever."

But what got Williams into boiling water was his comment that the golf meeting was "like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu." The comment seemed to confound the hosts and they asked him to clarify his comments. Williams dug himself a deeper hole by indicating that the President and Vice President Joe Biden were "the enemy."

For his comments, Williams was banned from ESPN's Monday Night Football musical intro where he asks "Are you ready for some football?" That was pretty much a no-brainer.

I have not heard anything about the President murdering Jews, gays, Gypsies and others during his term in office. Nor starting a world war. About the only folks he has murdered are terrorists, and I have a sneaking suspicion Hank Jr. isn't too upset about that.

Chances are Netanyahu isn't too keen about Hank Jr.'s comments either. Those are just a plain insult to not only President Obama, but others who saw their peoples exterminated by the Nazis. Williams' comments crossed over the line and were ignorant and offensive. Let's hope ESPN keeps him off the air instead of making like they did something so important with a one-game suspension if you will.

Williams, of course, can say whatever he wants. This is America after all, but that doesn't excuse foot-in-mouth disease.
